Answer from a JW friend about blood

i had got him to read the latest letters on blood that were posted last week.i can t believe he read them.

this is his reply (typos and all).

First of all, I'd like to challenge your friend to go to the butcher shop and buy any sirloin steak for his next barbeque. Then let some of the liquid that drains from the meat - even a drop or two - fall onto a microscope slide. There will be lots of red blood cells, hundreds perhaps, in those tiny drops of liquid. When he eats the steak, he'll be eating blood.

Secondly, I can most certainly tell you that 'gray area' items such as immune globulins, clotting factors derived from platelets, and albumin ARE regarded as blood products. Current guidelines from Canadian Blood Services (formerly known as the Canadian Red Cross) stipulate that anyone receiving these components be given a document stating that they have received a BLOOD PRODUCT. Nowhere is it described as a "drug". I have administered these products to patients hundreds of times, and I have a legal and ethical responsibility to disclose to my patients that what they are receiving is a BLOOD PRODUCT, not a drug, and to discuss the risks and benefits of receiving or refusing the BLOOD PRODUCT with them. There is a far more serious approach to administering an injection of immune globulin to a patient, than for example an injection of a narcotic.

Your friend is in a state of denial, which is clearly evident from the bizarre rationalizations in his note to you.

Notice how he next deflects attention away from the blood issue and then talks about the issue of molestation... he only knows of ONE case from 10 years ago of a JW who was a molester and remains DFd to this day, whereas 130 "preastes" have been caught in the last two months. Yes, yes, point the finger at the Catholics, we know the routine, don't we? Just remember.... when someone points a finger at you, there are 3 fingers on the same hand pointing back at them....

My wife's anxiety, guilt

my wife has been depressed each time we see our jw friends.

she doesn't want to see them anymore, because it reminds her of what she left behind, and it makes her feel bad.. i've offered to go back to meetings for a while to help her break away.

she never wants to go back, but her guilt and anger make her so uncomfortable around active jw's.....it's really bothering her.. any good books out there on breaking away from controlling organizations, especially concentrating on keeping the friendships but not the allegiance to the organization in question?

I had feelings similar to your wife's while going through the process of leaving the JWs.

I stumbled over a book that was the most therapeutic read I could have asked for. You see, my depression at the time was related to the overwhelming demands of being a JW, and no matter how hard I tried, it never seemed to be enough; the congregation always demanded more, as if Jehovah was unsatisfied with the best we were able to do. When I read the book, I saw what was wrong with the WTS for the first time, and it was not "me" at all.

The author is Jeff Vanvonderen, and the title is Tired of Trying to Measure Up. I believe it's available from Amazon.com. He goes into the dynamics of a 'shame-based' and 'works based' belief system and compares it to a 'grace-based' belief system. He is a Christian pastor, so be aware of that slant to his writing; however, I found the principles he described, as they applied to the JWs and the WTS, to be extremely eye-opening and liberating. I read this book before I even started delving into the theological and doctrinal problems in the WTS, and it was pretty much the starting point in my exit from the JWs.

Ginny mentioned Fr Leo Booth's book When God Becomes A Drug, which I have read, and recommend it.

The Subtle Power of Spiritual Abuse co-authored by Jeff Vanvonderen and David Johnson, is another good one.

I found a downloadable version of bejeweled on Yahoo games the other day. They call it Diamond Mine. I've been playing Bejeweled off and on for about a year. Love it.

Let's have a baby shower!!!

as most of you know one of our long time posters, "mommy"/wendy, is expecting a baby in the very near future.

as some of you may not know (and i hope she doesn't plot my murder for discussing it) wendy is going through some real tough times.

she could use a few things for the baby considering getting by with two other children is difficult enough!.

Of course I stubbornly said no, as I "played" with it a bit myself today I forgot how well those work for spying on the kids. lol It is definatly a present that has many uses.

You're so right that a nursery monitor has many uses! When I was on bedrest with my 3rd, it came in handy for whenever I needed someone to wait on me! It was also useful in the early days after the baby's arrival when I was busy nursing and needed a glass of water or juice (or a something stronger... j/k!!)

We had the book study in our home at the time when I was on bedrest, too, and not wanting to miss out on the "spiritual food", I set up the nursery monitor so that I could listen in on the study while upstairs in bed. We had a few sisters with babies in our group, and once my daughter was born, we let our bedroom be used as a nursing room, as I kept a rocking chair there. Everyone was very impressed at how they didn't really have to miss any part of the book study to go feed their baby.

The sisters all thought it was a wonderful idea, and soon all the book study groups in the congregation were using the baby monitors to help the new mothers in this way. However, when the CO found out about it, a "Local Needs" talk put the skids to the idea, because sisters were "isolating" themselves and "not showing appreciation" for the book study, and effectively "foresaking the gathering of yourselves together as some have the custom". Within a few weeks, the book study groups were re-organized and the 'privilege' was taken away from us and given to someone else who did not have baby monitors in their home.

Anyway, I know you'll put it to good use!! I kind of wish I still had mine, I think it would be handy to have in case the elders ever stop in and I need to discreetly record the conversation!

i recently admitted to a jw back in wisconsin that we no longer go to meetings.

i told her that we have not disassociated but we do not think of ourselves as jws anymore.

i had been close friends with this person since 1974. .

Crap! cried the hypnotist.

It took three weeks to clean up the theatre.

Update on my Brother and Cousin...

as some of you know, my brother and cousin have been planning to tell their parents about their beliefs (or rather, lack of) about the jw's and their decision not to attend meetings or convert others.. well, they did it much quicker than i ever expected.

they did it before yesterday, to be more precise.

both of them...phew.
