LOL Jeff - great suggestion. He could also have a stall at the assemblies.

I can't imagine this situation, but if it were me, I would accept a few invites, but not all. Just say, "I have to work" or "I have plans that night" or "I promised myself I would stay in that night and get to bed by 10".

When we were JW's, we didn't accept all invites. You aren't drawn to every person that extends and invitation. We made sure we were not always available. Family plans, school event, need to study, going away for the weekend, etc.

He could say he has explosive diarhea. No one wants to mess with that.

Why do we seem to think that we have to give a reason for not accepting an invitation in the first place. The love bombing will soon wear off. Yes or no should suffice when asked. Gumby should try to be a private person and scale back without having to explain his every move and action. In my former congregation, there were many who were well liked and yet you couldn't get too much information out of them. It was like the actor Gary Cooper, who answered everything with the words "YEP!" or "NOPE!

My advice is to do what I did when I stepped down and I did the fade. Less conversation, showed up for meetings when the song was being sung, Left right after prayer, did this by going to the men's room right after prayer then out the door from there. I showed up late for field service after the pairing who with who. Then opted to go on returns and as soon as the first coffee break came up I would move on. Less and less is my advice that worked for me. Remember, you don't have to answer every question thrown at you, yes or no will do just fine. A smile will also work. Excusing oneself is good to do also.

Gumby, maybe this will help you, maybe not. All the best to you! I hope you find some peace for yourself in all of this.

Here's a political prisonoer who broke out of jail, holed up in a safe house with a bunch of other escapees, and then decided to break back into prison. And now he's asking for advice on how to get along with the inmates? Am I the only one who thinks this is weird?

    Greetings Mary,

I surmise that means the Gumster has been re-instated? Well he needs to remember the old dub adage, "You reap what you sow". He'll just have to suffer through the love-bombing. Plus he deserves it.. I tip my hat to him.

    Jeff, you are hillarious!

If Gumby is such a likable guy, maybe he should try being the ultimate bore.

Or, he could just start responding to himself in conversation and they might leave him alone.

Minimus said: He has the curse of being likeable. People WANT him around them. They ENJOY his company. If Gumby wants to be less invited, don't be so damn likeable. Express some snippiness, a bad mood more often. Show irritation. In other words don't let your best side come out with the "friends". If they see you're not the same cool guy and that you aren't as fun(ny) any more, they might be less inclined to invite you over.....

That's a damn good idea Min....I know he's very well liked and the fact that they're not giving him the "trial period" to "prove his loyalty to the Borg Organization" is almost unheard of. Actually, not only should he maybe not be as friendly, but what if just started acting crazy or saying really weird (not apostate) stuff? I think the invites would dwindle pretty quick.

But you reap what you sow by going back. Obviously, Gumby's well aware of the love bombing. However if Gumby feels he might indeed be sucked back in to the cult, he MUST get out and realize that at least he tried to make things workable.

    Amen.

Nosferatu said: I think Gumby should have a part time job (on top of his normal job) to help get him out of the horrible debt he incurred while he was in Satan's system of things. Drugs cost a lot of money you know! But it can't interfere with his meeting attendance and service. It can however interfere with "fine association".

Yep. I already gave him a similar suggestion and the kind of job I suggested would get him off the hook for at least some of the meetings and socializing. Not only that, but if someone said "Where's Gumby tonight", his family could say "he's working". While missing Meetings for your work is still very much frowned upon, it's better than saying "he just didn't feel like coming tonight" and is at least a legitimate excuse.

Junction Guy said: He could tell them that the demons are attacking him with a bad case of social phobia and depression in order to keep him away from the JW friends.

LMAO......yep.....that's why I thought he should maybe act crazy....Blondie and Finally Free, excellent suggestions

A-K Jeff' and mama119, I'm afraid he might actually try both your suggestions. Thanks Mulan and everyone else.

    Hi!!!

I have heard that when someone gives up the smoking habit that just the least smell of tabacco smoke, even on someones clothing can trigger the urge for a smoke. Just being around people with strong perfume can cause serious reactions in some people..

Gumbers wouldn't want to take the chance of a lapse into sin. Sometimes sensitivities prevent people from even going to meetings. Some people have to stay at home and listen to meetings on the phone to avoid contact with offensive odors encountered at meetings.

    The options are limitless.

Go Gumby. But remember that if you don't return I have dibs on your avatar.
