    Greetings, Dear Friends:

A good day to all! After a month's sojourn, I'm glad to see YDJ up and running again. All your comments are welcomed and appreciated.

Yes, Open Mind - autumn is wonderful and I, personally, am diggin' it - and my garden!
The colors are showing - a sudden turn in the weather for cool. Looks like rain today. Till later ...

And, yes, ESTEE, so good to speak freely - welcome back!

It was a beautiful, sunny day here too, unseasonally warm - but I'm a heat-lover anyway so that made it better! The leaves are just beginning to change colour, the berries are all out on my rowan, snowberry, berberis and pyracanthas - a veritable feast for the small birds which visit my garden :-) 'My' one frog vacated the pond a couple of days ago to find somewhere to hibernate for the winter - probably, it will be in my garage which is full of junk to hide under but no car, or under a pile of wood at the back of the garage - lots of woodlice and slugs to feed on there!

We'll be putting our clocks back 1 hour to good ole GMT in 3 weeks - that fills me with dread because I'll be coming home from work in the dark and I hate being terrorised by feral kids dressed in their idea of Halloween costumes - any version of a plastic facemask and a black bin liner - where's the imagination in that? We used to make our costumes!! The fear will be compounded by bonfire night and fireworks being thrown around just for the sake of making noise.

I try to remember when those two occasions were fun times rather than fearful ones...

Why oh why can't I go and hibernate in the garage with the frog?!

Speaking of fireworks being thrown around just for the sake of making noise, Mr Estee's dog (Chow Chow named "Kuba") was scared of fireworks --- terrified! Maybe he thought it was thunder?
Of course, I use the past tense because he "left" us in June. Gone to doggie heaven.

    Anybody else have this challenge?

    Love to all,

ESTEE, sorry to hear about the loss of your dog. Our pets do so become part of the family.

I don't think any animals like fireworks - they usually have sharper hearing than us humans so the high intensity bangs will be much louder to them, it probably hurts their ears :-( If they're elderly and their hearing is going, the distorted noise can be equally frightening, that's why some old dogs end up barking at anything - tv, people etc.

I remember a funny incident when I was walking my friend's Irish Setter, who hated loud bangs (yes, this is a gundog breed!). A car's exhaust backfired - and she shot off down the road - with me in tow!! We didn't stop till we were safe back home!

Another beautiful, warm, sunny day here - and its forecast to stay like this all weekend woohoo!!

Have a great day and weekend all.

    Good Morning, Friends:

Rain again today - so very early in the season. My outdoor jobs are cancelled. Guess I'll just stick around here for a while ... Listening to Franz Liszt's tone poem [he the inventor of the tone poem] "Les Preludes."

    Have a great day,

Absolutely beautiful day here today! It was about 27C here today, way warmer and sunnier than it should be this time of year, but I'm not complaining! I left for work early today, and before stopping at the office took the doggies to the river. There are several fishing ponds and a couple of fishermen were out and the fish were biting this morning! The water was still and calm, the trees mirrored on the surface. The river water was flowing swiftly, but the surface was smooth. I stopped and meditated for a few minutes, just standing there, my eyes closed, breathing in the fresh air. When I opened them there was a lone Mallard duck floating along with the current.

PIcked up my work for the day and headed home. Picked a nice boquet of Dhalias from the garden. Colours ranging from burgundy, reds, oranges, yellow and creamy white. The are sitting on my windowsill, catching the sun as it shines in. They are a "happy" flower and always bring a smile to my face with their bright, bold colours.

Had lunch with a couple of the girls from the office. It's Ocktoberfest here for the next week. We went downtown for the "tapping of the keg". There were about 1000 people there for beer, sausage and schnitzel. Yummy. This is the largest Bavarian festival outside of Munich, with approximately 700,000 people attending. Lots of Gemuetlichkeit being spread around! We will definatelybe sampling some fine German beer and food over the next week!

What altitude are you CoCo? I heard snow advisories for the Sierra on the radio today.

I'm a California low-lander so all I saw were gorgeous clouds with a brief sprinkle or two.

Glad to hear you're not feeling "Liszt-less".

    Bumble Bee:

I enjoyed your meditation vicariously. And I'm envying your Oktoberfest. I'll have to see what's available locally.

Oh yeah! The Blue Angels will be buzzing San Fran this weekend! Regardless of your feelings towards the military, they are an incredible sight to behold.

    Hey Open Mind,

Love those cloud formations after a storm, particularly in the late afternoon. Yesterday was incredible, what with a clear blue sky still heavily-laden with thunderheads perched majestically o'er the mountaintops [2500 - 3500 foot elevation in our neck o' the woods].

Today began rainy, as mentioned earlier, and sufficient to put a damper on outdoor jobs for the day. During a several hour respite, the sun shone warmly as a few fluffy clouds, played upon by light winds, dotted the sky. However, the sky is gray once again and piddling ever so gently.

Brought in my delicate plants as frost can apply the kiss of death any time now ...

Thanks Open Mind, BB, ESTEE and Emo for your ever-lovely shares!

Mr. Estee and I love gardening, too. We just moved into our house in May, so spent the year discovering all the perennials as they came along --- and went.

One thing we especially loved was a plant called Crocosmia, which has bright red flowers --- and attracted several hummingbirds. What a pleasure watching them flying about throughout the
    summer!

We also have several varieties of roses and clematis.

We have decided to plant some herbs next year, just not sure what --- yet. I was thinking oregano, garlic, parsley, and cilantro might be nice for starters.

    Any other ideas?

    hugs to all

    Greetings All!

Wishing everyone a great and productive [or slothful, vegetative-state-if-you're-really-tired-and-are-not-feeling-guilty-about-skipping-field-service] weekend. Silly me - we gave up guilt long ago ...

    Hey ESTEE:

That discovery of what lies asleep in a newly acquired garden has always fascinated me. And, too, what is already growing profusely and is beggin' for a little TLC! I recall my joy at moving to a new home when young and getting the go-ahead to design and plant our new grounds. I guess you already know, ESTEE, that there are many avid gardeners here at JWD ...

Are you going to have a kitchen garden? I live on what amounts to a wildlife preserve so I have to do a lot of pot-culture on my deck ... yet the saucy squirrels can mess with that. I used to have raised beds elsewhere, which I found easier to cultivate and maintain, particularly in a more confined area. When I lived in the midwest we simply cultivated a large expanse of ground and let 'er rip - huge plants that seemed to grow overnight, producing more vegetables than we could ever eat.

Can you garden most of the year where you live? I seem to remember your area as very mild when I was there ...

    Tell us more!

    CoCo
