When I was a witness I sacrificed a lot of my time for ‘kingdom interests’. I truly believed that I was doing good and I enjoyed very much talking to people, esp. those that were interested in the Bible and God. I think there are a lot of witnesses like that. Not all by any means, mind you , but a lot.
I do not think that sleepy was arguing about the end results of the work of the average witness, just their motivation and their intent. I cannot accept the fact that all witnesses are evil and out to control other peoples’ lives. I know this because I was one for many years and I know many witnesses who are still ‘in’ and I know them to be very decent and good people.
As far as listening to other people’s wisdom…it’s true that we are responsible for our own actions but it’s a fact that people can be scammed (Is that a word?!) and most of the time for far less nobler reasons than a lot of JW’s.
For the record: I never hated worldly people. I did not serve as an elder to push people around nor did I take advantage of my position for any personal gain. I never felt superior to my brothers and sisters. I served because I saw a need.
It's only now that I know that I was not really helping them at all. But the point is: While I was a witness I did what I thought was right. If I am to be judged let it be for my intent.
Hi Sleepy,
I agree with Eman, et al. I was ready to post what Farkel posted about Adolph Hitler. The other example that sprang to my mind was the Taliban. Hey, they stopped warring factions in their country. I bet drug use is no problem. They keep the younguns in line. They were stable. . . . and on and on with various groups.
How about the Mafia? Good family men. Church going. Loyal to certain people.
It just doesn't wash with the WTS supposed good points.
But, other than that ((((((Sleepy)))))!

Sleepy,
The "Faithful and Discreet Slave" aka "Unfaithful Indiscreet Slavemaker Class" claims to provide the "food at the proper time" That food coming from the bible is certainly good and benificial. But The "FDS" mixes deadly poison with the food. That makes them guilty, but, the average JW, even though they may be fooled, still carries that poisoned food to everyone they can. There is some responsibility on them also. (most of my family, children, grandchildren, sisters, their families, etc. are still JWs)

What is the point you are making?
I do not know the motives of the Mafia ,Hitler or the Taliban.
I do know the motives of many witnesses.
I'm, as Frenchy correctly points out talking about the motivation that people had to do what they did as witnesses.
Often it was love.
People did go on the ministry because they wanted to.
For example if you are a witness you believe you will survive arrmageddon if you do 1 hour or 100 so what motivates a person to do more? Its not fear .
Most elders wanted to help people and did not desire authority over others.
Dont confuse the results with the motives.
If a person is taught and given evidence that they do have the answers to peoples problems they may be wrong if they try to help, they are not evil.
If you support Evil you are Evil.Whether you know it or not.Take responsability for your actions..Don`t confuse motives with results?Jws want to:bring world peace and make the world a paradise.Just as soon as they kill everyone who didn`t join up!Am I confusing motives with results?Do you really want to support a religion that would kill your wife for not preaching that filth?...OUTLAW
The Golden Rule:The people with the gold make the rules.
One of the outcomes of the trials after WWII is that the defense of "I was just following orders" doesn't wash. Many of those serving under Hitler probably thought that they were doing things for the good of THEIR country, making it a better Germany for all Germans by eradicating the non-German people from their borders. It doesn't make what they did right though. That's the point that they're trying to make.
Just 'cause a JW has good motives or not doesn't make the terrible message they carry any less poisonous. And I still argue that the majority of JWs do NOT serve from some great and noble 'love' of man, but rather from a) pressure from others (fitting in with the 'group'), b) guilt (preach or you are bloodguility for their deaths), c) fear of punishment from god.
If they were truely touched by the suffering of fellow humans they would be doing more than shoving WT/Awakes upon people who need food, shelter, clothing, mental help, medical help, shelter from abusive family, etc, etc, etc. That would be true love for fellow man. Not selling them the same pipe dream that has YOU stuck in the endless meat grinder of 'do more do more do more' JW-hood.
sleepy,
: The point again is that if we claim that Jehovahs witnesses are all bad people, never any good, stupid, idiots whatever, we are being just like them.
Your initial post and all your subsequent replies are a strawman, despite the fact that it has been pointed out that many individual JWs are not evil.
You confuse attacks on the leaders of the JWs with attacks on JWs themselves. If JWs did not have such confused and/or evil leaders, most of them would not carry on the shameful and wasteful conduct they do.
Hitler was evil and many people who were not necessarily disposed to being evil were made to do evil things. The WTS leadership is evil and many people who were not necessarily disposed to being evil were and are made to do evil things.
Do you understand how most of us feel now? Don't try to draw the fire away from the REAL problem and then claim we think all dubs the root cause of the evil we fight.
Besides that, if we thought all dubs are stupid, braindead and evil, then wouldn't we complete idiots for trying to help them see the truth about their religion?
Farkel
"I didn't mean what I meant."
“If you support Evil you are Evil. Whether you know it or not.” I suppose that at face value that might seem logical. I would be quick to argue, however, that one is generally not held accountable for what he does not know. I would argue that, at some time or other, we have all done some evil thinking all the time that we were doing good. That does not make one evil. For without the intent of evil, can one truly be called evil?
The point is often brought up that JW’s want to kill (or want dead) everyone that is not one of their own. I do not dispute that a great many of them do. The Society certainly teaches that. But not all witnesses are eager to see billions of people slaughtered. The very thought of that scares the hell out of most when they get down to actually thinking about that. I cannot characterize JW’s on the whole as mass murderers.
The religion is not out to kill your wife, or your children, or your parents. At the very worst, in a nutshell, people in that religion have been convinced that God will destroy those who are not ‘in the truth’.
