The buildup of dopamine is bad because it causes an extra sense of pleasure for a short time. This leads to two problems. First, your brain is wired to want to repeat pleasurable activities. Second short term memory tends to lapse.

Coke is a hell of a drug.

No need to apologize. I don't think you're being mean or dishonest--you're simply misguided.

Fwiw we here in The UK are leaders in the world, ( alongside The US) in medical research. If you have any doubt look up GSK. I pass a huge research facility every day that they have at Stevenage. This is a world leading drug company.

My own son obtained a 1st in Medical Biochemistry at Kings College London. a world leader in embryonic stem cell research, and biomedical research. Interestingly one of the leading authorities there is Dr Stephen Minger from of all places The US, i have met him at a lecture there.

So we who have socialized medicine, ( i loathe that term) have leading centres of research, both privately and publicly funded, so to even insinuate that we do not is nonsense.

I am really disappointed with the religious hang up over stem cell research. That is one area we will obviously not be able to excel in at this point.

...and that (along with the same in France, Germany, Canada, etc) is why it's pointless to chase down John Doe's vague claims that he "wouldn't be here" save for the circumstances of medical research that have happened under the US system; his claims are nonsense.

That's a complete strawman sixer. I said I wouldn't be here save for the research of scientists and that our profit driven system is fueling the most advances in medical sciences right now, including a possible cure for my disease. Are you lying, or do you simply have a reading comprehension problem?

It was well known that bush was against embryonic cell research, and that Obama is lot more sympathetic to it. We in The UK as well as The US are quite happy to have mix private and public funding.

There is one discernable difference though, and that is that in The US there seems to be a far greater prevalence of private benefactors willing to fund this research.

    So much for the goodbye

So much for the response. You actually have no rational response (assuming you are capable of it), because there is none. The information speaks for itself. As I have said, over the long run, medical advances will do much more for the quality of life of people than socialization. Socialization slows down the pace of progress, because it removes the incentives. Human beings are selfish. They act in their own interest. This is the truth. Any system that does not harness this for the good is doomed to fail. Not only is free market capitalism what naturally happens when no force majeure intervenes to force anyone, it also happens to be the best system for this. Order and development naturally spring out of chaos, if it were not so, we would never haveevolved and formed over time from the base matter of the Universe. It is no different in human interactions. Let market anarchy reign, the results are far better than the interventions of a fallible intelligent designer. As Lord Acton said, power corrupts, and nowhere is it more corrupting than when it comes to moralizing socialist busybodies.

Had we socialized medicine 200 years ago, we'd still be seeing quacks and witch doctors, and living to 45. BUT HEY! THERE WOULD BE PARITY!!!!!

    Think about that.
