Whiskey Sam: "There are two billion Chinese workers ready to take your job for a fraction of your wages."

Thanks to people like you. But that can be stopped. With plenty of cheap Chinese

Also tell me, Sherlocks, how much of their shoddy products will Americans buy with no wages?

By the way, its 1.4 billion Chinese, not 2 billion.

Not only can companies function without the American workers, they don't even want want you, you're a liability because you're a whining ninny. If they really needed you, why are they sending jobs offshore faster than the U.S. can create new jobs? Believe me, there's plenty of business out there, it's just not staying in America. Because it doesn't have to....

OMG, this attitude here really frightens me. Do you not realize that you are part of the American workers these executive don't need? Pretty soon, the only jobs available to Americans will be government jobs if this trend continues. The government already finances much for the working poor now.

When you do get that job at Wal-mart, let me know what it's like.

Start thinking about it and you will see....

I am thinking about and I see something that you don't seem to or just won't acknowledge. If we, in this country, do not have jobs that enable us to support these companies, it's the companies that will fail in the long run. They're being short-sighted. I have to buy them now, but if things keep going like this no one will be able to buy them except the people they're paying $1.25 an hour; how much profit are they going to make then? But no, it has nothing to with outrageous executive compensations at all, it's because we won't work for cheap enough and we aren't spending what little money we do have.

    my dear gary,

the answer is not in the unions............

    1. the goverment gotta start taxing: imports high-->30-40%,

    2. and get rid of state sales tax and enact a national sales tax of 20% or so (like europe)

So only people with a 'skill' should be able to make $14 an hour??

Yes! That is why there is a difference between SKILLED and UNSKILLED labor. That is why a guy that digs ditches gets paid less than the guy that knows how to line said ditch with concrete. That is why a guy that humps cinder block gets paid less than the guy that knows how to take said cinder block and create the foundation of a building with it. That is why a guy that humps sheet rock gets paid less than the guy that knows how to hang it, tape it, and plaster it. That, my dear is why there are SKILLED and UNSKILLED laborers.

Do you know that in most cities, it takes at least $14 an hour to rent a two bedroom apartment and support a family of 2-4?

Why, yes I do, dear. In case you haven't noticed I live in Los Angeles, and it is not exactly cheap to live here. It's easier, however, to toss out this phony indignation that I dared to say that dragging products across a scanner is not worth $17 an hour. Get over yourself.

    Now to deall with Villblowhard:

They do a lot more than that and you would not last beyond one or two customers if you were thrown in without any training behind a supermarket cash register.

You don't know anything about me or what I have done. so leave the purely emotional reactions out of it.

First there a dozen procedures to remember and follow through on consistently.

So do most people, so what's your point?

Then you have to memorize over a hundred codes for produce. In case you never noticed they don't have price stickers.

Really? Seems to me that I have seen those produce codes on stickers attached to the produce itself. Keep going, you are only making my point.

And by the way, $14-$17, for an average of 30 hours a week in Los Angeles, would not be able to afford a home in the middle class neighborhood that they worked in (Full time is extremely rare and no, that had nothing to do with health insurance).

So? If you can't afford to buy a home then don't buy one. Simple as that. Unless you believe that there is some "right" to home ownership.

And as far as crapping on people, it is you that have crapped on me because I don't believe that dragging products across a scanner is deserving of $17 an hour. So why don't you "f" yourself. It is you that demonstrated arrogance and a sense of entitlement with your thoughts that people deserve something for nothing.

@Dana - Sorry to rock the boat but, company's like Caterpillar are already doing 60% (and growing) of their sales offshore. Their selling to the Chinese, Russians, and the like already. Hence they're building the equipment in offshore factories. U.S. demand is too low. American users of this type of equipment are buying cheaper imports. Business and product are flowing in the opposite direction.

@Villa - I'm not Pro-Chinese or any other country. Just like you, I'm getting fewer and fewer choices of where items are made. It has to come from the cheap labor. Even India is feeling the under current of places like Africa starting to take on more business. It's starting in Africa now. If the Africans will work for .85 cents an hour, that's where the business will go....it has to. We're in a global economy now, the cheapest cost to produce a product or service will trump all others.

@Gary - Yes, with the ultra fast internet now most jobs can be outsourced, however, in my particular situation, I am not in fear of that.

To everyone, this is why I was pounding the table yesterday, "IMPROVE YOUR SKILLSETS" so that your job cannot be shipped offshore. It's up to you to find out what that is....

I didn't say unskilled shouldn't make less than skilled workers. My point is that unskilled labor should be able to make a living wage.

How much should a guy who works full time (as if there is there any such thing as a 40 hours a week labor job anymore...) digging ditches (or any 'unskilled' labor job...factory worker, grocery night stocker, janitor, whatever...) make? Let's say he's been working for the company for 3 years. And let's say the very profitable company is in LA, California. The guy is a very hard worker. Over the years he has become very skilled at his 'unskilled' job. How much is a fair wage?
