So what if people hated going to Home Depot?

I've seen two Home Depots that are going out of business. The Lowes here are doing fine.

Here in my city, the home depot gives good service. At lowes, it's difficult to interrupt the staff standing around in a circle gabbing to get help on finding stuff.

I no longer shop at Home Depot, Lowes or Walmart. Instead I choose to shop at Ace Hardware, Trader Joes, and the local Farmers Market and online for some clothing and durable goods -- usually made in the USA if possible.

In my experience, the Home Depots that give good service are the undershopped or sometimes the moderately shopped ones. They require an ireducible skeleton crew to operate. Once a Home Depot becomes extensively shopped the personnel is not increased to the level necessary to handle the customer load.

I would be surprised that Lowe's would be overshopped for construction material-contractors find it too expensive over there. It's probably being shopped a lot for their better quality of home decor and appliances.

Also, if it's during the weekend that you shop, the general public will crowd a store. But not too much on weekdays if contractors don't shop there.

My Home Depot was swamped both weekdays and weekends not just because of the general public, but because of contractors in the building trade who work and shop all days of the week.

    Amazing!!

AP – This Oct. 26, 2010 photograph provided by Joule Unlimited shows the company’s ethanol and diesel production … By JAY LINDSAY, Associated Press – 17 mins ago

CAMBRIDGE, Mass. – A Massachusetts biotechnology company says it can produce the fuel that runs Jaguars and jet engines using the same ingredients that make grass grow.

Joule Unlimited has invented a genetically-engineered organism that it says simply secretes diesel fuel or ethanol wherever it finds sunlight, water and carbon dioxide.

The Cambridge, Mass.-based company says it can manipulate the organism to produce the renewable fuels on demand at unprecedented rates, and can do it in facilities large and small at costs comparable to the cheapest fossil fuels.

What can it mean? No less than "energy independence," Joule's web site tells the world, even if the world's not quite convinced.

"We make some lofty claims, all of which we believe, all which we've validated, all of which we've shown to investors," said Joule chief executive Bill Sims.

"If we're half right, this revolutionizes the world's largest industry, which is the oil and gas industry," he said. "And if we're right, there's no reason why this technology can't change the world."

Sam, thanks. I may see if they want an outside consultant (I have a business license) to review material. Unfortunately Massachusetts is a long way from Seattle (although I was born in Boston and I'm still a Red Sox fan).

    I'm still waiting.

Answers for the union haters and the welfare haters...please - tell me what your answer is.

You want unions busted. Roll back wages and pensions. You hate the idea of the public union (or any union in some cases) and you hate the fact that your tax dollars are going toward pensions, healthcare and wages for public employees.

If we do all that you want and then it becomes recognized that those workers fall into line with welfare guidelines and they then use that to prop up their wages in order to live - do you think we should abolish the welfare system as well?

Like I said - you have people at Walmart that YOU subsidize every day with welfare. To the tune of MILLIONS of dollars. We could probably add in a lot of big retail stores in that list. Would you like to abolish welfare for everyone that has a job and force them to live on what they earn only?

    I'm waiting because I"m confused.

It's either subsidize workers because they aren't paid enough to live on or pay them enough to live on and they won't use welfare. Or abolish it altogether. Multiple choice.
