I am not saying the petition is intolerant. I am saying that it could easily appear that way to the average person in the UK, which is unfortunate but perhaps unavoidable because it is a complex issue.

Well that's perhaps inevitable. No petition that "names names" in demanding action against a group of individuals is going to keep everyone happy. However, I worded the petition as carefully as possible to keep it factual and to the point. Either people will agree with the points made, or they won't. However, surely you would agree that if 60 million Brits were instantly made aware of the petition and the reasons behind it, we would at least scrape past the 100,000 mark?!!

An intriguing statement included in the petition is the following:

We also ask that the charity commission should take greater care in ensuring that all charitable organisations serve in the public benefit, according to the 2006 Charities Act.

This seems to beg the question: is it the intention to suggest that religions in general that have charitable status fail to provide public benefit or that Jehovah's Witnesses are especially egregious in this regard? The phrasing as it stands seems to hedge its bets. I would prefer clarity. In my view Jehovha's Witnesses are worse than most other religions in this regard and we should not be afraid to draw attention to that fact.

Don't get me wrong, the petition is very well written and I support it fully. I am just talking about tactics in general and it's good to get these issues straightened out in our own mind so we can present them better to others.

I think I will print a few flyers off. But I wouldn't post them through doors I don't think. What about leaving them in doctors surgeries and libraries and the like?

I really hope that this effort is successful. GO BRITS!! Somethings to think about for this idea to be successful:

    1) This is not a sprint. It is a marathon that will last at least 365 days (1 year), so learn to balance work, family, hobbies, and campaigning to maintain a healthy and happy life and attitude.

    2) Daily (274/day) and weekly (1923/week) goals should be set to reach 100,000 signatures and remind everyone what you have accomplished regularly. It would be good for someone to report daily how many signatures have been collected by posting it on this thread.

    3) It would help to get www.jwfacts.com, www.watchtower.com, and other websites to post links to signing this petition on-line.

    3) It might help to promote signing this petition in the real world as much as possible where people gather. I wonder if the 2012 Olympics in London would be a good place to gather signatures?

    4) Learn to forgive yourself for making mistakes. Everyone does! Just learn from your mistakes, try not to repeat them, and continue to come up with new ideas (think outside the box).

    5) If possible, make a game of collecting signatures. I wonder if anyone would like to make an easy drink bet with me that I will be able to get a politician to submit a bill, the Treasury Department to review, or a law organization to file a court case that would prohibit the WTBTS from qualifying for tax exempt status before you Brits get paraliment to debate whether organizations like the WTBTS should receive tax exemptions or support them as a charity?

Peace be with you and everyone, who you love,

    Robert

I will be passing this on to two non-JW British ex-pats I know here in the States. They were appalled to find out about the decades long shunning of my DFed gay brother.

    Good work Cedars!
