just because A promotes B doesn't mean that B can only exist because of A - simon

Quran (A) promotes Violence(B), therefore Violence (B) can only exist because of Quran (A).

You completely reversed what I said by changing "doesn't mean" to "therefore". That seems like a contrived attempt to make it look like I said something I didn't or am claiming that all violence is caused by the quran which of course would be idiotic.

To fit things to the example I gave the correct version would be:

"Just because the Quran (A) promotes Violence(B), doesn't mean that Violence (B) can only exist because of Quran (A)."

See how it makes complete sense when you get it right?

Would anyone argue with that statement?

Isn't that what you are suggesting? Decry the book and Muslim terrorism is cut off at the knees?

Stop laying the foundation for extremism by promoting hateful intollerance and teaching it to your children.

Otherwise don't be surprised if someone comes along and says to them "hey, we're making those things you've been taught about happen - come join us!"

jgnat - yes the West does share some responsibility, and therefore some blame, for a lot of things.

But at least you seem to be willing to admit that those who are directly to blame for violence, be it Islamic or Rwandan, are those who wield the sword.

Simon, I have no problem with what you have written in this latest post (15561). I reacted, badly, and I still strongly disagree, that the religion is the disease. Religions morph in to kinder versions of themselves as societies evolve.

Interestingly, Islam was progressive while Christianity went through it's medaeval phase. We got our maths, our celestial observations from Islam. Islamic influence helped spark the enlightenment.

I still strongly disagree, that the religion is the disease. Religions morph in to kinder versions of themselves as societies evolve.

For religion to morph into kinder version of themselves means they must have been less-kind or unkind at some point. Isn't this simple logic?

If something is better than what it was then it means what it used to be was worse than what it is now.

We agree that Christianity has made this change and it's been helped by making commandments historical and past-tense, no longer relevant, expired.

That is what islam has to do.

And religion doesn't do this because it wants to - it only does what it has to, what it's forced to in order to survive.

Islam has no reason to change while people are saying it has no reason to change !

Interestingly, Islam was progressive while Christianity went through it's medaeval phase. We got our maths, our celestial observations from Islam. Islamic influence helped spark the enlightenment.

Very interesting but debatable and irrelevant. So they went backwards and we went forwards? Well done our team and sucks to be them guys?

I'm more interested in the here and now and what has to be done to make the world a better place.

"protect islam and all that it stands for" does not a better world make.

'Interestingly, Islam was progressive while Christianity went through its medieval phase'

Yes, I wonder how apostates were treated in medieval Raqqa?

BTW: People's view of the 'Dark Ages' / Medeaval times are ususally wrong:

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dark_Ages_(historiography)

The medieval period is frequently caricatured as supposedly a "time of ignorance and superstition" which placed "the word of religious authorities over personal experience and rational activity." [42] However, rationality was increasingly held in high regard as the Middle Ages progressed. The historian of science Edward Grant, writes that "If revolutionary rational thoughts were expressed [in the 18th century], they were made possible because of the long medieval tradition that established the use of reason as one of the most important of human activities". [43] Furthermore, David Lindberg says that, contrary to common belief, "the late medieval scholar rarely experienced the coercive power of the church and would have regarded himself as free (particularly in the natural sciences) to follow reason and observation wherever they led". [44]

The caricature of the period is also reflected in a number of more specific notions. For instance, a claim that was first propagated in the 19th century [45] [46] and is still very common in popular culture is the supposition that all people in the Middle Ages believed that the Earth was flat. This claim is mistaken. [46] [47] In fact, lecturers in the medieval universities commonly advanced evidence in favor of the idea that the Earth was a sphere. [48] Lindberg and Ronald Numbers write: "There was scarcely a Christian scholar of the Middle Ages who did not acknowledge [Earth's] sphericity and even know its approximate circumference". [49]

Other misconceptions such as: "the Church prohibited autopsies and dissections during the Middle Ages", "the rise of Christianity killed off ancient science", and "the medieval Christian church suppressed the growth of natural philosophy", are all cited by Ronald Numbers as examples of widely popular myths that still pass as historical truth, although they are not supported by current historical research. [50] They help maintain the idea of a "Dark Age" spanning through the medieval period.

Thomas Aquinas in the 12th century the earth is a sphere.

My understanding is when Islam took their empire they accepted maths and science from other cultures.

Dumbest post of the thread. And that is saying something.
