I think the difference is that the extreme extremist JW's, Amish, Mormon etc don't subscribe to honor killings as an effective deterrant/punishment to speaking out or acting out against the tenets of their faith. They shun. At least for now, that's the limit of the extreme. Talk to a woman who wears the hijab or niqab or burka and ask them what would happen if they fall in love with a man who's not a Muslim. That boy had better convert to Islam and be damn convincing about it or it can get pretty ugly pretty fast. Which is why you don't see women who wear the hijab or niqab or burka going anywhere near men who aren't Muslim.
Ladies, please. Let's not in any way say that this is acceptable in the 21st century. Yes, the Christian religions have been through similar episodes in their history and yes, I think they're all crap but some crap is just way stinkier than other crap.

Nobody is saying honor killings, shunning, stoning, or any of the other horrible stuff practiced by some Muslims is ok.

What has been said is that not all or even most Muslims do these things, that Islam is like Christianity in that it is huge and made up of many different peoples with many different beliefs and practices, and that you can't paint all of Islam with a broad brush.
People who don't want to be painted would make sure they have clear air between them and the paint targets.

And you're right, Lisa. Most Muslims who live in western culture don't subscribe to or participate in honor killings. It's still a pretty fine line though, because when you really talk with these women, they have a hard time distinguishing between why the hijab is so super important and why never marrying a non-muslim is also super important but why an honor killing for breaking those rules is wrong so the thought of truly breaking loose is incomprehensible. I feel for these women and want them to start doing some serious critical thinking because I believe that only through women breaking the cycle is true reform possible. Maybe it has begun on some levels, but I don't think the tide is going in the favor of the reformists right now and it's hard to watch.

That is in NO way my experience working with muslim women.
Why do all muslims have to pay for the actions of those in the extreme? We have seen extremes in chrisitanity and judaism just recently, but somehow we do not hold all christians or jews accountable for the actions of those few Why muslims? Why middle eastern muslims?
