Simon:
Again though, if someone kills in the name of chistianity then it's easy to say - erm no, that's not what christianity teaches. When someone does it in the name of islam though, well, aren't they then just following the commandments of their god because that is what it teaches, <- the fundamental issue
There are about as many interpretations of both religions as there are members. It's easy to cherry-pick horrible things from the 'holy books' of both. All of this is summed up by what I said before:
In each of the 'Abrahamic religions' there is a spectrum of religious conviction that ranges from dangerous to irrelevant. The more nonsense in their own 'holy books' that religious people reject, the more harmless they become. People often like to put that more politely by referring to fundamentalists and moderates.
So when people start saying that one lot of potentially dangerous superstitious nonsense is worse than the other lot of potentially dangerous superstitious nonsense, I simply shake my head.

Some of you guys need to abandon your media driven fears and try assuming the best of people.
Fear will only drive you to hate, and to use it as the justification for great evil. All evil is rooted in fear. I'm not saying doing the opposite won't lead to being disappointed and hurt sometimes, but it is the answer to radical islam and creating a better world for the generations to come. Again, this is the politically correct view but it is disengenuous to pretend that both religions cover the same specrum to quite the same degree and it is much harder to twist the christian scriptures into justification for killing than it is the quoran.

Hi I'm a long-time lurker who has followed this thread with interest.
When I can be bothered I'll introduce myself properly to JWN.
I broadly agree with Simon, cofty et al on this issue.
I'm from England, a place where the metropolitan, metrosexual liberal elite has no problem criticising and ridiculing Christianity but defend Islam from similar criticism and ridicule (think Laurie Pennie, Owen Jones).
Islam did not go through reformation and enlightenment, unlike mainstream Christianity. A reformation of Islam, though unlikely, is long overdue. In my opinion this should come from within the 'muslim community' in the first instance. If this gets nowhere then change should come from without.

This type thinking of not being on guard against Islam led to the World Trade Center attacks and Muslims bringing down the world trade center in NYC killing over 3,000 people. How would you feel about relaxing screening & security at all airports, because you think we should assume the best out of Islam? The only religion that has caused heightened airport security around the world is Islam. What religion would love to detonate a nuclear bomb in NYC or Washington, DC? It's Islam, and they would not give a shit about also killing any "nice moderate Muslims" who lived there.

You are spot on. It is a strange marriage.
Conduct that would normally be loudly condemned by any rational person is being given a free pass becausse of cultural relativism.
If I insisted my wife wears a black bag every time she leaves the house I ought to be criticised mercilessly. If I hit her I should be arrested. For some reason Islam gets a free pass becasue it is "their culture".
Widespread child abuse went on in Rotherham for many years because the perpetrators were Muslim and the social wokers were afraid of falling foul of the liberal elite's protection of other cultures.
Any Muslim who is unwilling to state that Mo was wrong regarding his attitude to women and that the Quran ought to be disregarded on that point is a religious fanatic just as we once were.

First off, quoran isn't a word, and you've misspelled it often enough for it not to be a simple typo. Correct usage in English is Quran, Qur'an or Koran.
Secondly, my statements have hardly been 'politically correct' in regard to the superstitious nonsense taught in both religions (as well as Judaism).
Most importantly, broadly associating Islam with terrorism merely polarises communities, which is precisely the goal of fundamentalist factions.
