    Cult, high-control group, sect...

    They're a fascist religious oligarchy.

By the way, this is an excellent thread.

    Simon,

: I have a copy of the bible that has 8 translations per page (same verses) and they all convey the meaning much better IMHO than the stilted, strained english of the NWT.

On the contrary! While some older translations say, "he anointeth my head with oil, the NWT more correctly states "he slathered my head with axle-grease."

Just because the KJV reads like poetry and the NWT reads like a Transmission-Repair Manual is no reason for your unnecessarily harsh criticism of it!

JWs are a symptom. Their leadership is the disease.

Yep, "followers of followers" aptly describes them. As Ray Franz so nicely put it, they're all "victims of victims".

    Cheers, Ozzie

As far as I am concerned, all religions are cults. Why do you need a religion to believe in or follow God?

As far as some of the other claims, I find the NWT to be lacking compared to other BIbles I have, Some passages are downright confusing in it. But basically, it is no worse than any other of the biased and slanted translations, of which all are.

I find their argument over the cross or stake to be totally ridiculous. If you believe in Jesus, what he actually died on matters very little. The point being that he died.

While the dubs lead the list on the numbers of false prophecies, or as they put it, unfulfilled expectations, most every religion has also had their miscreants who have predicted doom and gloom and failed. This surely doesn't absolve the dubs from their guilt, but some of the claims as to dates get a bit far. True, 1914 and 1975 were the biggies and as far as I am concerned, pure false prophecy. But some of the other dates aren't even worth making a fuss over. Those two alone show how false they are. It doesn't hurt to keep track of the other dates, but the claims made weren't as profound as they were for 1914 and 1975.

I really don't have a problem with what they believe, until it starts hurting innocents. Then, it needs to be exposed.

Currently, other than the UN scandal and the pedophile cover-up, the higher ups living and traveling all over off the backs of free labor is what bothers me.

In the end, wouldn't it be great that instead of us just fading away, they did?

Stupid critisism no1: Pedophiles are protected. (not like Jan who molests young girls openly)

    as for this:

"It's certainly got me grounded again and from now on I'm going to spend my time and efforts to expose the WTS for what it really is: a communist-led conspiracy financed by the Illuminati and Tri-Lateral Commission with connections spread out to the Druid communities in Europe and the Voodoo communities in the Caribbean and an Unholy Alliance with the modern Knights Templar in the Vatican.

Once again, here's a big "Thank you!"

    Farkel "

    That's ridiculous!!!

We must presume that you find the subject of adults raping infants a subject for amusement.

Perhaps you picked up this sense of humor in the jungles that you pretend to have tramped through as a 'Gilead Missionary', perhaps not. One thing is for sure, it is neither funny nor clever, which leads me to suppose that neither are you.

Great thread JanH - definitely got all of the board members out of the woodwork and thinking.

Lisa: I can really appreciate what you mean about the followers making a personal choice when they decide to shun. I have made it known to my family that when they choose to invite or not invite me to a wedding, to speak or not to speak, etc that they are making a personal choice. I refuse to let them fall back on the "you know what the organization says" line. It definitely causes a twinge in them when I let them know I won't accept a cop-out reason and that I deem decisions to be made as personal choices.

I am comfortable with the word cult. When I have spoked with current members in private and their worries about leaving are not centered on displeasing God, but rather on the fears of wasting years of their life, their routine and their social circle, to me that demonstrates an extreme devotion to an organization that dictates all facets of life and determines to keep it's members by hook or crook.

I disagree with the term brainwash myself ,I don't believe they use any form of hypnotism. In fact I disagree with their policy of studying 6 months before being baptized a christian.I think they do use brow beating and peer pressure to influence church members ability to question the teachings .Let's face it if they say jump they want you asking how high. There have been centuries though, of religions using scare tactics to ensure patronage and control over their flock but as far as I could tell they don't use the old hell fire teachings that were previously used even though there is alot of the criticism for the jw fear of armageddon on this board..The jw do not use the tactic of pentecostal religion and do not claim to perform faith healing in fact they are very low key to the point of obscurity. As far as being a cult I believe all religion are cults and as mentioned in many replies so far ,most organized groups could qualify as a cult .
