Hey wondering. Yes, I was born and raised in central NY. Don't live there now though. Brother Scaliogne was in a congregation in Utica, NY last I knew...Paris Hill congregation it seems like. Remember Brother Casper? He was pretty decent. I think his wife got sick with cancer and died :(

I have to concur with FredHall..
When I was real young my folks dragged me to see him speak "live". He was blind and just stood there quoting scriptures from memory. Everyone seemed to be in such awe of him, but my sister and I thought he was a weirdo....
Didn't really like any of the COs that came and went. All they seemed to do is eat our food all up and tell us how much we needed to improve.
Glad I don't have to hear that anymore!!

Under the heading of pleasant COs were:
A gentleman named Davies. Now, I am going back to the 50s. Davies and his wife seemed like very agreeable people. They were both quite young at the time of there serving in a Michigan circuit. I later heard that he retired from the CO work and was living in Illinois (I think).
The one I liked most (whose name I can not recall) was of Portuguese descent and had lived in the North Eastern US. He was the most riveting JW speaker I ever heard. He served in Central Indiana where he was really loved by all, later in the Detroit area and the last I heard his circuit included Brooklyn Bethel. I heard later that he left the CO work because of his ailing parents. I’m sure someone here will remember his name.
I knew Grizzle as a CO and in that role he did an excellent job (or at least that was my view from my untrained eyes at the time – I was raised a JW). He worked very hard. I remember a Circuit Assembly during which he had a severe case of laryngitis, but he did not miss a beat. Kept working Friday afternoon to help setup the school gym for the assembly and gave his talks in a whisper. During one of his visits to our congregation I had some question about the “accounts” that I was taking care of and he said he would go over my questions with me before he left town. The week came and went, including the Sunday morning meetings, Sunday afternoon field service and a meal in the somewhere. I thought he was not going to keep his word. However, Sunday evening, when I thought a lesser man would have gone to his room to rest, Grizzle did come over to my house to give me private instruction on record keeping as Brooklyn wanted it.
Nick Kovalak was also a pleasant fellow. He once offered to recommend my dad for the circuit work (this was in the 40s when Nick was our CO). My dad wanted it so bad he could taste it, but my mother didn’t think she could handle being on the road.
Oscar Pillars followed Kovalak as our CO, if memory serves me correctly. He seemed OK. The things I remember most about Pillars were his very large feet and huge shoes.
Carey Barber was our CO when I was a teenager. He sure could put an audience to sleep. Many remarked about his dry sense of humor.
Worst DO I ever saw was named Anderson. In the mid 50s I was at a pre-assembly rehearsal for a demo in Lansing Michigan. I had a small part in this demo directed by the CO, Davies. Anderson proceeded to berate Davies up one side and down the other. I felt extremely sorry for Davies and extremely embarrassed about the way Anderson was behaving. This scene was carried out in front of the entire cast for the demo, about 12 or 15 JWs. I have never seen anything like it before or since, at least in such a public manner.
Anyone remember the Portuguese CO?

my favorite was Lawrence & Lucy Thompson (now on RBC) who i dont _think_ was mentioned anywhere, altho its a long thread to read! they were in brazil for a long time, life story in WT about 5 years ago i think. he had a lot of kooky, purely personal views that he taught in his talks but that's what made him so fun.
i wonder if anyone has unwittingly mentioned Maximus by name

Room 215
Anthony Conte: Nutty but nice
John Mansavage: Lived up to his name
Ferd Crouse: Weirdness personified
Charles Homolka: Plastic Man
Floyd Adams: Brainless cypher with meddlesome wife
Dick Bartell: Mildly neurotic; Italian origin with Anglicized name
Richard Dickman: basically nice guy forced uncomfortably into WT mold
Lowell Quasny: Extraterrestrial robot
Angelo Catanzaro: personification of unfufilled potential

Anyone from Australia remember a guy called Les Simmons – His favourite expression was “Dirty filthy trash.” Usually when describing TV. He was on one of those weird diets.

Richard Dickman. Isn't that a little redundant?
Room 215, your post made me laugh. Your descriptions were great.

Hi Room 215,
Bartell, if we are thinking of the same guy, was the DO last summer here in the NE.
He got into BIG trouble with some of the sisters in his peer group. His wife died, and after maybe a couple of weeks he was like a crazed 15 -yr old going after any single pioneer sister under the age of 35 who would talk to him. A friend described an "encounter" with him.... grossed us all out completely He finally snagged one, and this was quite a topic of discussion Barf
