    I think with terrorism being at an all time high they need to search everyone's bag. Just an unfortunate side effect of some people being stupid.

    Well be honest - you aint gonna see any Bin Ladens on any US flight because the US government flew the whole family out of the country the day after 9/11 on a special flight, when every flight in the country was grounded. Cos they are big buddies.

    So perhaps you should be searching everyone who looks like George Dubbya (vacuous look, golf clubs, reading book held upside down)

    PACE (Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984) provides that officers must act reasonably in all stop and searches and have to show reason to believe or reason to suspect a person is carrying a prohibited item/s.
    To detain someone for a short period to ascertain whether this is the case is not a breach of article 5 of the convention and not an unacceptable intrusion into our lives...irrespective as to your personal feelings on the subject;

    NO it is not like a treacher punishing the whole class for the error of one.

    Having my basic rights denied due to the actions of another is undue punishment to me.

    But if you want to protect yourself...maybe if you wear different clothes and maybe if you walk home earlier , and Maybe if you go home with a friend you might be giving yourself more protection from a bad thing happening.

    Yes. A victim of rape may choose to protect themselves by being more cautious... but they may choose not to. It is up to the individual. It is their right to wear different clothes and it is their right to continue wearing mini-skirts if he/she so desires.

    Searches are not conducted by choice. Giving the police the power to look through MY BAG is not at all the same. You are not giving me the choice to protect myself by allowing a search of my bag... you are FORCING me to "protect" myself. (although how much good it actually does in completely unknown)

    It is like saying all rape victims MUST NEVER wear mini-skirtsor drink to protect them from increasing their chances of being raped.

    Your point is terrorists will look like everyone else and mingle so that you don't know who's doing what. SOME terrorists do that and others are very pronounced about their views, their attitudes and are proud to be Islamic extremists. Neo-Nazi "looking" people give me reason to pause too. If someone has a swastika on his arm and spouts anti-jew talk, I am going to think he is going to be capable of violence. Gangs that proudly wear their "colors" are others that I will see and not want to inflame. Look in American mosques and see some of the "terrorists" that have been arrested. Yup, they look like terrorists to me,too.

    It is forcing you to search your bag in order to protect the general public.

    Rights are always a balancing act. They are never absolute.

    You have to weigh your rights against other peoples rights. Is your right not to show your bag more important than other peoples right to be protected from bombs?

    You think your right is more important. I think other peoples rights are more important in this situation.

    We will never agree

    You know what? In this day and age, it has become neccessary for bags to be searched at times. It really is for the safety for everyone involved. Is it irritating? Sure, I would rather not have to walk through metal detectors, be searched, etc. But, I would rather feel safe.

    So big deal. If you have things you don't want others seeing, then figure something else out, or stay at home.
