    Search away!

Nothing to hide or be ashamed of. No problem on my part!

Perhaps those human rights activists would prefer to be blown up?!

Yesterday, while on my drive home from work, I heard Dr. Laura speak a total truth: "Activists are among the angriest people there are. To be an activist of any sort is to always look for an excuse to be angry about something".

But, is searching bags really going to stop terrorists? It may stop them from bombing public transportation, but they'll find other targets. I think suicide bombers will just start targeting other public areas like cafes, schools, and theaters. I mean, sure, I'll be safe riding the subway, but then I would have to worry about getting blown to peices while ordering a cup of coffee.

I hear police in NYC are going to start checking people's bags before the used the subway. Does anyone know it this is true?

In NYC they are already doing it.

Yes, thats true. They announced random bag checks hours after the second lot of bombings in London.

No, of course random bag checks are not going to stop a terrorist attack, BUT - is that an excuse to do nothing?

If your relative had just died from a bomb would you be mad that they HAD random bag checked, or that they HADNT random bag checked.

Basically the authorities are in an impossible position, but they have to do something, or people will say 'why did you do nothing?'

Regarding not "looking right", I'm sorry but if a person *looks* like a terrorist, I want him thoroughly checked out before he gets on the plane.

WTH? God comments like this scare me. Geez. What does a terrorist look like? So if I'm a person of Middle Eastern descent, a long black beard, dark skinned, and wearing a turban, I should be searched because in "your" mind I look like a terrorist? Good grief. If you remember, Timothy McVeigh was one of the US's most well-recognized terrorists. And he was blonde haired, blue eyed, and American borne and bred. Would you have wanted him searched?

Mary McLoed, a suicide bomber suspects mother was just on CNN from one of the Island, fully covered in black (head cover, face cover and dark glasses over her eyes)...now I understand this is required dress for Moslem women...but aren't they also supposed to stay out of the public eye? This woman is all over the news denying that it was her son!

As far as New York City....they just had pictures on CNN of the checkpoints with very LARGE signs saying the Police will Randomly Check Bags. Boston is not planning on doing this at this time but is asking people to be vigilant and observant. So I guess if you see someone in a winter coat getting on a Subway, Underground or Bus... or someone leave a package, breafcase or backpack and run like the devil.......you'd best call 911 or 999!

Now they're talking about the fact that the explosives in yesterday's attacks in London were partially detonated, homemade explosives and they're very concerned about where and for how long these explosives were made and stored. Now I guess we'd best keep an eye on our neighbors also?

Too true, BG, weve GOT to resist these ridiculous stereotypes.

What if the bombers were carrying bibles - a few years ago that would have made ALL OF US prime suspects, and how hard would we have bleated that it wasnt fair, we were just genuine christians carrying the tools of our trade in our book bags.

Its easy to be unreasonable when you are on the side of the fence that isnt going to receive mass prejudice.

If it isn't going to stop attacks then why waste the time/resources doing it instead of putting those things toward something more productive?

Why not try working on tightening security for the long term instead of random checks for a period of time AFTER an attack? Increase police presence (perhaps with bomb sniffing dogs)? Install more video cameras? Do more complete checks on people immigrating into the country or visiting?

(katiekitten: I didn't understand that illustration at all... no need to be snotty, I am trying to follow the thread and post my opinions on it; thank you.)

Billygoat....I can understand where you're coming from, but here's a story that I think you'll find humorous!

My son is 6ft 1in, he has for the last 15 years worn his very dark hair very short (i.e. he shaves it to a 1/2 inch fuzz), he also sculpts his sideburns and chin hair......wears Doc Martins, blue jeans and an old green fatigue jacket. In December 2001, he and his fiance spent a week in Washington, DC and decided to visit the Holocaust Museum.......yes you guessed it! He was pull aside after entering the building and searched as he looked like a "skin head"...funny as my son knows more about the holocaust than most Jewish people.

Flash forward, April 2002...my son and his fiance take their long awaited 3 week vacation to Europe...Italy, Germany, the Czech Republic....not problems at all with customs or security....they arrive back in Orlando, FL go through customs and security...take the shuttle back to the main building and boom.....he's stopped and taken to a back room to have his luggage and his body searched! Why....because he had dark hair and they we're pulling dark haired men in that day (bear in mind he'd already been through 2 previous security checkpoints).

People are going to stereotype....it's not right by it's a fact of life and as he said......hey Mom, I had nothing to hide!
