Does anyone remember when women could be servants in the congregation?

this was before the elder arrangement.

in the 1950's our congregation servant's wife handled the accounts--by appointment from the society.

in the early 1960's it was a practice to allow a sister to handle the congregation book study if there was a shortage of brothers.

My mother was the Literature Servant in the 50's.......shortage of brothers

I also remember many times at meetings for service and book study, no brothers would show so a sister would pull out a tissue or paper napkin and put it on her head. As a young one, even I thought it was disrespectful. Some years later the WTBS came out with instructions Not to use such things are head coverings. If no proper head piece is available then none should be used. I can't remember though if the sister can still conduct or if they just do not have a meeting. Anyone know?

How Many Here Got Depressed Once You Realized It Wasn't The "Truth"?

Depressed is one way of putting it but for me it was more Grief. My core relationships all died. Everything closest to me was gone. Like so many others, I questioned all the teachings for a long time so it was not finding out the 'Truf' is False but it was the lifestyle I lost. I do not miss the mind control of course but I do miss the schedual of knowing where I was supposed to be 5times a week. I miss looking for new outfits for the summer convention. I miss wearing DRESSES for gawd sake. I know that is crazy but very true for me. I do janitorial and house cleaning so there is really no occation to get dressed up. I miss organizing family get-togethers and goodies after the book study.

but, after a chat with the po of our congo, we felt a little better with the knowledge that we are not alone on the inside.

I don't know how much of OtB post we can believe, like he said, too bad they didn't have a recording device. But I do know many active duds do not believe it's the Truth any longer. I have been completely out for over 2yrs but a few friends still stop by. Most to 'encourage' but some, 3 different active duds have openly confessed they Do No Believe EverythiYng. One is an elder, one a MS. On seperate occations all have asked openly why we 'quit' After a few comments from us, they have spilled their guts. We usually get out the scotch or wine bottle, hold their hand as they talk into the wee hours. We assure them we will keep this confedential and that we understand the delema they face.

The thing I have a hard time being understanding of is that they continue to preach from d2d. Handing out books and mags and TEACHING what they do not believe. I could not do that. I questioned things, did the research and Quit. It was the most difficult thing I ever did. Lost all ALL my so called friends but at least I could look myself in the mirror and know I was not spreading lies.

Help . . . any cooks out there?

i have think chicken breasts, mushrooms, seasonings, water crests .

anyone have any ideas or recipes?

i can't find anything in my one cookbook.

Does it have to be a Bible recipe? Just kidding but it is under Bible research.

I've been told I'm a good cook. I love new recipes, that's for sure. I made a chicken dish a couple weeks ago that was a Big Hit. I'll have to look up the exact directions and get back to you. But it is chicken breasts sliced thin and then pounded between plastic until very thin. Make Duxelles = Chop mushrooms very fine and saute in a bit of olive oil until all the juice is reduced. Spread a little goat cheese on the chicken breast then a Tbs of the mushrooms. Roll up and tie with string, saute in olive oil.

It sounds a bit complicated but not really. There is a sauce with white wine and the pan drippings to top it. I made garlic mashed potatoes and fresh tomatoes salad to go along.

Really REALLY good......um....if you like goat cheese.

Can I get back to you tomorrow morning? Sorry, it's getting late and I have to watch TV, guess what Top Chef.

i read the thread a few days ago about co, & do charles sinutko and his famous 1967 talk that ended with "stay alive 'till 1975".

it brought back a flood of memories.

Not that is would make one bit of difference, they aren't going to change but a writing campaign could be cathartic for us. Can we get more CO and DO address'?

Does anybody know Manaera-sp? A CO in the early 70's, SoCal. made me cry and sign the pioneer application.

Anyone recall the WTS's crazy notions about the literal "heart"?

back in my dub days, i used to make copies of all the old recorded talks i could get my hands on.

in the process i was surprised to come across several talks in which the "faithful slave" tried to make the case that all the scriptures talking about the "heart" were not figurative, but referred to one's literal heart--the organ itself!

as i recall, they even incorporated some pseudo-scientific quotes as "proof" that the heart could effect your thoughts and motivations.

Oh yes, I remember that teaching well. And the Kidneys too.....there is a scripture about Jehovah reading the kidneys....don't remember and no time to look it up.

My mother often used that phrase with Bible students 'reaching deep into the heart' As if the heart was the brain. It is more romantic than scientific.

I do believe all our organs make chemicals that effect emotions and thought. And vice versa, our thoughts produce chemicals that effect our organs.

Potty training kids and different views...

when i was growing up, i remember my parents would put those plastic "cover" things over my sisters panties and put those protective sheets on the bed to help them with potty training.

especially when they were doing great with using the potty on their own during the daytime.. my aunt in texas would beat her kids arses if they wet the bed.

(now i do not agree with this way).

Ok, I'm going to jump in here with the Grandparent viewpoint. If you want me to care for your child overnight and is not yet potty trained then I'm going to use 'pull ups' because I'm old and don't want to set my alarm to get up. I've played and washed and carried this little sweet thing all day and now I'm pooped out....Gotta go to bed. Heck, maybe I should try a pull-up so I don't have to get up in the night.

Please don't be offended, I'm just saying, maybe they are worn out. I had 4 children and all needed a different approach to 'potty training' My oldest son trained himself at 18mos. My daughter, with lots of work trained before 3. The next two boys needed every trick in the book. The youngest wet the bed until almost 5. The thing I learned was, they all learn to use the potty long before the start hight school.

In the Big Picture of things, this potty training phase is a very short period of time. Keep your washing machine is good working order and make peace with the wet bed.

Learning About Self

i must say that i haven't had an internal struggle with myself before as i've had in recent months.

i'm learning so much about myself....about the kind of person i truly am, more about my flaws, my weaknesses, my strengths, the person i want to be, etc.

i'm learning more and more about having a more realistic view of dealing with life.

Good For You, RF ! I do relate to your struggle, the Good Struggle to learn about your self. As JW's we were told to mindlessly obey and all would be well....Well, we found out, didn't we, all is Not well. Life is not stagnate, everyday we face change. For myself, I never developed or learned to accept that I would grow old or that my loved ones would grow old and die....Ha, guess what, I'm now eligible for AARP benefits and my mother needs full time nursing care. She raised me to believe she would never die, I am unprepared to care for her.

I've learned that Change happens everyday and we must learn to adjust and grow with it. I came upon this quote a few days ago that is now prominently displayed on my refrigerator. Prehaps you will enjoy it too.

Yes, in fact I remember the CO's wife telling us about China in connection to Matt 24:14. The entire inhabited earth will recieve the Good News because China wants the MEPS program in exchange for allowing our literature into the country. And something about using our books to teach english in schools. So don't worry, the 'work' is getting done all over the earth................The End can come now.

This was about 5yrs ago now. She told this to everybody, as if Big News! And there was never any retraction at our KH.
