"But liquid reasoning always prevails. God must have had a purpose. There must be important things in his future. And the dying children? Well there is reasoning for that too. As I said. It is airtight. ..." New Chapter, page 15, post #6192

Personally, I'd call "airtight", a vacuum, but that's just me...

"I don't care. I want to believe. I don't care about science or history. I believe in creation, and I don't want to investigate. I just want to believe. ..." New Chapter's fundamentalist cousin
I actually laughed. It was the most honest thing I ever heard a believer say. She was aware that science could debunk creation, therefore she didn't want to look at science---she just wanted to believe. ..." New Chapter, page 16, post #6195

    Ahhh, at last....

    What Diogenes was searching for...

An honest man - er, Christian fundamentalist...

Well, Ziddinia - I think that n.Drew does have a point.

She says she wants to believe in God. (that is fine with me, maybe not my personal cup of tea, but that is her privilidge).

She also quite reasonably says that the Bible reports many instances in which God could be taken as evil or bad. She rationalizes this by either ignoring such cases, or making the assumption that they were wrongly translated.

I think that this is no different than mainstream religion making the logical conclusion that the flood was not universal, that the creative days were not 24 hour days, and so on. She is actually taking moral or ethical good from the Bible where she can and overlooking what does not make sense either morally, logically, or ethically.

That to me is quite reasonable - much more reasonable than a hard line fundamentalist.

It can be a vacuum, or it could be a 1,500 psi compressed air tank as well.

Hey, I don't "rag" on my Wiccan friends when they talk about "spell-casting" or "crystal healing" or any other "magical" aspects of their lives...

On the other hand, my Wiccan friends ALSO don't get "in my face" with self-righteous , judgmental proclamations as to how"they" are "RIGHT" and I am "WRONG"...

In fact, if pressed, most of THEM will admit that their concept of a "deity" is more of a psychological construct; a sort of mental "tool" that helps them shape their thought processes, define their lives, and focus their energies - be they physical energies, mental energies, emotional energies, or psychic energies...

In fact, when I state that I'm a "Neo-PolyTheist Atheist", that is about the mindset that I have towards the "Goddesses" - I view them as "models" or "forms" of ASPECTS of womankind, generated in different locations at different times within human history, that can teach me much about what life as a female human being can encompass...

But I NEVER think of them as "REAL". I am ALWAYS AWARE that these are imaginary constructs from my own mind that I am PRETENDING to communicate with.

I can't say why this seems to "work", though I suspect it takes on a form of "self-hypnosis". And of course, it doesn't work all of the time, nor does it work for every person who tries it.

That last part sound really, really familiar, doesn't it??? [eeeee - vil grin...]

If any of my Wiccan friends showed the level of arrogance, duplicity, self-delusion [and I have met a few witches/Wiccans who WERE severely delusional] and over-weening lust for control of peoples' minds and lives that I've seen in the history of the three Middle-Eastern religions, I'd hammer away at THEIR lies, just as hard.

The greatest evils are committed by people who are so absolutely positive that they are RIGHT, that they never even check their course of action for flaws.

tec's apparent inability to look at ANYthing that we present her with, and her inability to say, "Ooops, I'm wrong, I see that now", is what causes me to view her "righteousness" with an extremely calloused eye - and the same goes for the "Greek chorus" that follow such "christy-christy" lines of thought within threads...

    Point taken, Ziddina.

I was just sticking up for n.Drew for a post or two - I believe she must be doing some Yoga, hunting mushrooms, or disciplining Bad Robots.

There never really is any resolution to threads like this, is there?

Occasionally, just as when attempting to awaken Jehovah's Witnesses to the corruption of the Watchtower Corporation, one does actually "get through to them"...

It is gratifying to note that religion is generally losing much of its power... Islam is a "last gasp", but there are indications that even that will eventually soften and dissipate... Unfortunately, not within our lifetimes...

Zinnina please, can you remember where I have said you are wrong?

And Woods, How am I wrong about "accursed accursed" not meaning to "utterly destroy?"

    Ziddina I am hardly going to give you the benefit of the doubt and say the concept of a "deity" is more of a psychological construct;

But thanks for the phrase as it might answer Woods query about why the Jews were chosen, but not anybody else.

They came from Abraham. He who was called "Jahweh's friend". I suspect it takes a special something to acknowledge one needs to be led because we don't know what's ahead.

I suspect Zid you will find some kind of insult in this post too and refuse to answer it rationally. So then, where did I say you were wrong? Please refresh my memory. I may have, but I don't remember.

Oh yes! I remember you said I was Alice. I said you were wrong. You were wrong. I am not Alice.
