Your ability to find a nice-sounding verse chages nothing.-Cofty

There are plenty of nice sounding verses in the Koran, I just randomly flicked through it and found one, it took no ability whatsoever. I just wanted to do an experiment to see if only hatred was on every page, but there is both.

Most Muslims need to reject all the extreme commands of the Koran, and I think they probably do in private and get on with their peaceful lives.

What really is a moderate Muslim, this can probably be defined in so many ways that an actual definition is useless.

However so, had they bothered to do some basic research

And you expect every potential recruit to do that? That is the problem!

You shouldn't need to do research - the interpretation should be clear and agreed. They should publish a quran with lines through the expired parts to make it clear.

They are not doing a good enough job as it stands. Whether that is by design, carelessness, laziness or some false sense of honoring the dumb book - they need to stop it being an extremists call to arms.

You forget the huge category of conservative muslims. They believe that every word of the quran and hadith is from Al.

Rejecting a single word of it is not possible.

Even the way most muslims treat the physical copy of the book demonstrates their attitude to it's contents. They must keep it on the top shelf (move it in bookshops just for fun) and wash before touching it.

Please watch the Ayaan Kirsi Ali video I posted a couple of pages back. She actually knows what she is talking about.

Kate, What really is a moderate Muslim ... ?

If there is such a thing, it would be someone that self-identifies as a Muslim but doesn't really take the Koran literally. That would be analogous to most people that today self-identify as Christians or Jews.

Those that still take a fundamentalist view of their religious texts are just as dangerous as their modern Muslim fanatics.

    Crazy is as crazy does.

Religion has got to go, all of it!

15% of Muslims are Shia Muslims and 85% of Muslims are Sunni Muslims. How do we catogorise them? Some Sunni Muslims are conservative, some are liberal, some are moderate, and some are non-practicing. They are such a huge religion it's impossible to compartmentalise and generalise. This has been the main theme of my posts................treat them as individuals, don't jump to conclusions about what they believe.

Thanks Oub for answering my question. I am curious as to what posters would say so I started a thread.

@Frazzled - stop dancing around the issue. You know in your heart of hearts that, although KateWild made a good attempt, the verse she posted did not answer my question.

Given that there are people who want to behead me if I do not convert to Islam, I feel that my being pedantic is fully justified!

Are there any Quranic verses that explicitly say 'forgive/show mercy to the unbeliever'?

This question still stands, and still needs to be answered.

treat them as individuals, don't jump to conclusions about what they believe. - Kate

Treat them with respect by believing then when they tell you what they believe. Millions of muslims - perhaps the vast majority - view the quran as the very word of Mo.

Extremists do what they do for reasons of religious ideology. Why do so many liberal westerners disrespect them by insisting there are other, more profound reasons?

If somebody believes that a book that spews hatred for others is inspired by god, that will effect their attitude and actions.

There is a straight line between the quran and hadith the way millions of musims view women, kafir, homosexuals and apostates.

I think your talking in a n extremist manner now, for a start most Muslims in the whole world don't even know you exist much more want you dead. Secondly radical extremist groups don't want you dead personally they are choosing their targets randomly to get the most impact like Sept 11, 2001.

I think your overly paranoid and that is what is dangerous.
