Qcmbr, people weren't supporting Islamic teachings; people were stating that it was in no way unique, and CAN (and does) contain "moderate" versions of its beliefs when fully integrated into a Western society. Like all religions, it's malleable for good and bad.

Christianity is probably not the closest comparison, as it's just a retcon of Jewish religion, purposely made to be more nice, PC, and appealing in a more civilized time and place, comparatively (and thus easier to fit in with modern morals). For a near 1-1 comparison, one need look no further than Judaism, which is based on Holy Books that contain every single thing that you attribute to the Koran, but worse. However, Jews integrate into Western society now, for the most part, due to various reasons, but also due to choosing to interpret their scriptures in a much less violent fashion overall. However, in the Middle East, their scriptures are still used to further conflict.

So, no, their beliefs are no more "incompatable" than any Abrahamic religion - they would just have to "re-interpret" or ignore the non compatable writings like Western Judaism and Christianity do. As many/most due already.

The first step to re-interpreting is to say that it requires re-interpretation, i.e. that it is wrong.

    LoveUniHateExams,

My apologies if a previous post of mine conveyed the wrong idea. I was certainly NOT trying to suggest that we (i.e. the West) have caused Moslem extremism. What I was trying to say (and okay, oviously did not make a very good job of it!) was with reference to those Moslems who are notextremists. (And such Moslems do exist - this is something I am at odds about with many other posters on this thread).

The point I was trying to make the other day is that by ourselves becoming extremists, we would run the risk of driving those Moslems who are in the moderate camp more toward the extremist side.

i.e. Western extremism is not the cause of Moslem extremism - but make no mistake, it has the potential to make an already bad situation worse.

That's it for now, my flight out to Olympic Dam is getting ready to board.

I look forward to further dialogue about these matters, but will now have to once again run for it, or I will be walking the 540 kilometres across the South Australian desert!

    Bill.

It's possible moderate followers of Islam are afraid they will be tracked down and be minus their heads, if they make anything but positive statements about Islam. Remember Salman Rushdie?

Rushdie is diseased and mentally unbalanced, then.

"i.e. Western extremism is not the cause of Moslem extremism - but make no mistake, it has the potential to make an already bad situation worse."...

what about when there are people that publicly speak out about islam? people who are just telling the truth about what they've experienced or what the koran teaches and they feel that to not speak out is a form of capitulation. They say that to speak in hushed tones proves to muslim leaders that you have been brought into submission ...you fear the result of "disrespecting" mohammad and his koran.

is it extremism if a non-muslim calls a spade a spade but not if it's a former muslim saying it?

Isn't it incumbent on people of the west to stand side by side with these who are brave enough to say something?

No, he was one of he very few to tell it like it is.

He's a very smart and articulate guy, pity there aren't more like him.
