O.k just worked out how to start a new post/thread, just came across this and wanted to share with anyone that may be interested.

Coeur d‘Alene, Idaho, city officials have laid down the law to Christian pastors within their community, telling them bluntly via an ordinance that if they refuse to marry homosexuals, they will face jail time and fines.

It would be interesting if persons disfellowshipped for their sex-orientation would apply to be married by an accredited JW Minister. Hall or not.

the court case may be killing two birds with one stone, touching on the disfellowshipping and the gender question.

If some one in Coeur d'Alene has the heart of Alene.

Good grief.....don't those city officials have anything better to do than threaten Christian Pastors with jail time for politely declining to marry same sex people? I can see maybe enforcing a public wedding chapel business to treat everyone equal, but to force individuals to go against their bible beliefs is just wrong in this country. A gay couple could just as easy go to the Justice of the Peace or find a Minister who has no problem marrying them. What will the Government make people do next that is against their beliefs?

Alphaman:What will the Government make people do next that is against their beliefs? Ban their beliefs entirerly...just an idea

    This is interesting also:http://www.prisonplanet.com/pope-francis-and-shimon-peres-discuss-the-establishment-of-a-united-nations-of-religions.html

But there is one type of Christian that Pope Francis does not have anything positive to say about.

Pope Francis says that there is not any room for “fundamentalism” in Christianity…

Following his first visit to the Middle East as pope last month, the pontiff criticized fundamentalism in Christianity, Islam and Judaism as a form of violence.

“A fundamentalist group, even if it kills no one, even it strikes no one, is violent. The mental structure of fundamentalism is violence in the name of God.”

    But exactly what is “fundamentalism”?

The following is the definition that Google gives when you do a search…

“a form of a religion, especially Islam or Protestant Christianity, that upholds belief in the strict, literal interpretation of scripture.”

So is Pope Francis rejecting those Christians that believe in a strict, literal interpretation of the Bible?

And precisely what is his overall agenda?

Why has he been working so hard to reach out to other major religions all over the planet? A copy & paste of something I thought interesting

I think the real danger concerning sexual orientation is to the Church, because of their 501c status. Since they elected to go 501c, they have to comply with those rules. What if they start ordaining female pastors, then a homosexual person who wants to become a pastor is denied by the Church. Discrimination lawsuit ensues. The government will tell them either make that homosexual a pastor or lose your 501c status, which will also require the Church to pay back the tax exempt benefits they had gained since they became 501c.

    Geesh,

Here we go again. The Hitching Post is a commercial enterprise - not a church. They have a very nice website. Google it. The law is very clear that commercial businesses cannot discriiminate based on race, gender, etc. Recently sexual persuasion has been added to the list, which is way overdue in the minds of many, including me. This topic has been discussed at length on this site and in the US Supreme Court, where the courts have consistently indicated for decades that commercial enterprises which serve the public cannot discriminate.

The Washington Times is a conservative paper noted in the past for its stance against gays. That the Times wouldn't include this extremely relevant information is of more concern to me. The paper was started by the Rev. Moon. It doesn't completely lack credibility, but its leanings are about as far right as you can be before fallling into the Atlantic.

The Rev and the Missus are violating the law, and it isn't even close. They will lose. Again, this isn't a church; the Hitching Post is a business.

Nobody is going to 'force' clergy to marry anyone if it conflicts with their religion. This is a 'scare' story that is not really based on ALL the facts. Churches that are against marriage equality inflate these stories in order to gather more money and more followers, based on fear of the unknown.

Niemöller is perhaps best remembered for the quotation:

First they came for the Socialists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Socialist.

Then they came for the Trade Unionists, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Trade Unionist.

Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—
Because I was not a Jew.

Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak for me.

    Perry,

Bull freaking shift. They violated the law; it is that simple. They aren't coming for anyone who isn't breaking the law. And it's a damn good law. What part of the fact that the Hitching Post is a for profit commercial enterprise don't you get? There isn't a story here other than right wing, religious feeler perceiver hysteria.

And, my theist colleagues, it is entirely possible and perhaps likely that the Idaho city officials taking this stance have the same personal views as you. But gays and lesbians can now legally marry in 32 states (I believe that is correct), including Idaho. In the history of the US, few if any courts have ever found that a business selling commercial services to the general public has a First Amendment right to turn away customers on a discriminatory basis.

It is the law; they are both very good laws. The Reverend will lose. He deserves to lose. And if he violates the law, as long as he is running a for profit commercial enterprise, I hope they place his sorry ass in jail, because it is what he deserves.

This is my last post on this OP. Y'all hysterical right wing reactionary theists talk amongst yourselves.

AlphaMan you're right... those people " declining to marry same sex people" should be praised for their views, I mean what's next mixed race marriages!? Oh, wait, damn it.

Anyway, I think we should extend this support to all public servants... if the police show up to a burglary and the house belongs to a gay couple they could just 'politely decline' to intervene saying perhaps you should try the "gay police".

I know, we could have special pink fluffy ambulances for gay people manned by gay paramedics, so us 'normal' folks do not get mixed up with all the gay stuff. If a straight ambulance turns up to a 'gay incident' they should be allowed to 'politely decline'.

Now let's not forget the lawyers, they should not have to tolerate these people either. Court appointed attorneys could come in two types, those with brief cases and those with hand bags (if you know what I mean) ;o)

Oh, we could even have separate water fountains for 'normal humans' and 'gays', because otherwise us normals might go for a drink right after a gay has just had a drink and not even know it.

There is the problem though of ensuring 'the gays' follow these rules, perhaps we should make them wear a special symbol on their shirts (a fairy perhaps). That way you would be able to spot the gays immediately to ensure pathetic homophobic interfering backward thinking morons such as yourself do not have to alter your medieval thinking and come blinking and squinting into our modern society where most people believe that freedom and free speech stop short of oppressing people for no other reason than the body they were born into.

Sadly churches are generally exempt and are not forced to marry gay couples. I think it would be best to remove any licences from places that will not marry all citizens according to the law.

In a related story; In Houston there is a recently unvoted upon city ordinance that allows perverted men who identify with women to legally enter womens restrooms. Houston's lesbian mayor wants to force others to her way of thinking.

In response to the overthrow of the will of the people, critics organized and collected some 55,000 signatures to force either a repeal or a vote.

The city secretary stopped counting at about 19,000, affirming that the threshold of some 17,000 signatures had been met. But the city attorney stepped in and imposed several requirements, which opponents said were not in the city charter, and then the city attorney threw out most of the signatures because they didn't have enough signatures! That is simply an outrageous contempt for the law and rights of others.... an identifying mark of anti-theists.

In response, opponents filed suit. The city then issued subpoenas for the sermons of 5 area pastors, violating their free speech rights. The lesbian mayor is trying to bull-dog the citizens of Houston.
