Jwfacts, Why Do You Equate Miracles With Magic?

Note that the New Testament makes a distinction between Miracles and Magic in the case of Simon Magus (Simon the Magician). Performance of a miracle by the apostles was never called magic in this same way as Magus was called a Magician.

Note however, that the NT does not claim that Simon Magus COULD NOT PERFORM MAGIC. It just makes the suggestion that Simon was NOT AS GREAT A MAGICIAN as the apostles - he wanted to BUY their powers to improve his act. Not different, really, than Moses and the Pharoah's magicians.

Primative Superstitions All - with the usual human claim that "ours is better than yours".

I personally could not understand why the Bible lied and said the Egyptian magicians also managed to change their sticks into snakes. Would it have been more embarrassing if they couldnt ?

Well, that's exactly what happened in the Elijah story, who supposedly was directed by YHWH (via Holy Spirit) to challenge the prophets of Baal to a magical sign face-off on Mt Carmel. It was a magic showdown, where the idea was to show which God had the mostest powers and was able to PROVE THEIR EXISTENCE WITH A MIRACULOUS SIGN (setting fire to their own sacrifice).

YHWH issued the challenge, NOT for "human salvation" per se, but to prove His existence!

(And being that the account appeared in the Bible, it's not surprising who won, where the"human salvation" was not delivered to those 450 prophets of Baal, who were killed.)

    Here's the account (NIV):

16 So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah. 17 When he saw Elijah, he said to him, “Is that you, you troubler of Israel?”

18 “I have not made trouble for Israel,” Elijah replied. “But you and your father’s family have. You have abandoned the Lord ’s commands and have followed the Baals. 19 Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal and the four hundred prophets of Asherah, who eat at Jezebel’s table.”

20 So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel. 21 Elijah went before the people and said, “How long will you waver between two opinions? If the Lord is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.

    But the people said nothing.

22 Then Elijah said to them, “I am the only one of the Lord ’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets. 23 Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. 24 Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the name of the Lord . The god who answers by fire—he is God.”

Then all the people said, “What you say is good.”

25 Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, “Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.” 26 So they took the bull given them and prepared it.

Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. “Baal, answer us!” they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.

27 At noon Elijah began to taunt them. “Shout louder!” he said. “Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or traveling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.” 28 So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed. 29 Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.

30 Then Elijah said to all the people, “Come here to me.” They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the Lord , which had been torn down. 31 Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the Lord had come, saying, “Your name shall be Israel.” 32 With the stones he built an altar in the name of the Lord , and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs [a] of seed. 33 He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, “Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.”

34 “Do it again,” he said, and they did it again.

“Do it a third time,” he ordered, and they did it the third time. 35 The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.

36 At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: “ Lord , the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command. 37 Answer me, Lord , answer me, so these people will know that you, Lord , are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.”

38 Then the fire of the Lord fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.

39 When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, “The Lord —he is God! The Lord —he is God!”

40 Then Elijah commanded them, “Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!” They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley and slaughtered there.

Of course, it's a mythical story which happened "just before" we arrived. Heck, if it's in the Bible, so it MUST be true....

Note that the New Testament makes a distinction between Miracles and Magic in the case of Simon Magus (Simon the Magician). Performance of a miracle by the apostles was never called magic in this same way as Magus was called a Magician.

That's because the Apostles were using magic sparingly for good and Simon the Magus was abusing it to demonstrate HIS power (which he never had to begin with). He warped magic into an art which is actually what is forbidden, not the act of magic itself which is just humanity being used by God in a mystical way. A miracle is magic used sparingly for specific and benevolent purposes.

It also should be noted that creating static electricity would be considered a high form of magic in those days. Undiscovered science can account for much of the percieved "magic" that people experienced in the ancient world.

So Recovery, how do defend the WTBTS position of allowing parents to decide if their children should be allowed to play with toys that contain "magical elements", i.e. making it a conscience matter for the parents?

That strikes me as an obvious example of watering down of YHWH's CLEAR-CUT PROHIBITION against not only practicing magic, but encouraging or even pretending that a Xian supports the practice of magic.

Granted, Sparlock the Wizard was designed to be a clear-cut violation of the "magical element" guide-line in 1984 Awake (he's 100% magic, since he's called a Wizard), but I find it hypocritical to say that another toy that has a character which contains a "little bit" less reliance on magic is OK. Does God allow a "little bit" of idolatry or adultery, as long as it's not too much, as a conscience matter?

See, that was concern with focusing on Sparlock: it overlooks the real hypocrisy of watering down YHWH's commands, much as relegating sex with a menstruating women as a conscience matter when the OT considered it as the gravest of sins which cannot be ritually atoned.

The cars are exactly the same except for the engine. Just as a miracle and magic is exactly the same, except for who is powering it. Sweet. Well, as I already stated, Caleb can choose which engine he wants, he can power his wizard with Satan or Jehovah, making him perform either magic or a miracle. And if he chooses to make Satan the engine and the Wizard perform magic, he can then say it is a bad wizard that needs to be defeated. It is just a toy remember, waiting to be fueled by a child's imagination.

Yes, but the point you're forgetting is that none of us live in a bubble, but within a community where OTHERS understand the commonly-meaning for certain objects, eg Caleb could be playing with a small wooden cross, and the practice could be defended by your criteria by saying it's simply a piece of wood. True, but it overlooks the symbolism associated with the object by OTHERS, which is created and controlled by the author/creator of the fictional character (eg JK Rowles for Harry Potter, etc).

And that was the point which I questioned in that other Sparlock thread about Paul leaving out an important element for JWs to consider, when he excerpted from the 1994 Awake article and left out part of the policy.

Recovery, jwfacts addressed that issue by adding the omitted sentence that mentioned the need to consider stumbling effect on others, without offering resistance (well, at least not coming from HIM, but others, LOL!). He saw the point and changed it, so that was a sign of his commitment to fairness and facts, just from only last week. Can you claim the same commitment to truths?

The major difference between magic and miracles seems to be intent , purpose and source.

Magic intends to astonish..to focus attention on power itself . Bible miracles were to address

    real needs of people.
