My head is swimming, guys. Let's pick one topic and work it through slowly. Beat it to death if we like. Could we separate some of these issues on to a new thread?

For instance, I know there is TONS of stuff on cults that has no specific reference to JW's, some of which is referenced here, some elsewhere. But can this single issue be dealt with in a post or two? I do know one piece of literature that claims the Jehovah's Witnesses are not a cult, but it might be a little biased. The WTS wrote it.

Northern girl, I reached that conclusion through my own research. I'm not one to take much at face value. I'm weird that way. Guess that's why I was not a very good dub. There's a reason the witnesses are listed on almost every list of cults. Believe me, I was not happy to find out that I was raised in a cult.

Here is one link with alot of useful information:

Please do some independant reading! It boggles the mind.

    Take care!

Just thought I'd add this helpful paragraph lifted from the above site:

Jehovah's Witnesses, naturally, deny that their religious organization constitutes a cult. Social psychologists, theologians, and mental health professionals tend to disagree. What follows will explore factors that identify some cult-like attitudes and behaviours exhibited by Jehovah's Witnesses. One way the Witness leadership exercises extreme control over its members is by promoting the belief that they are a chosen people in sole possession of “the Truth.” This is common among cult groups. Another high-control tactic used is that its members are not allowed to question or doubt the organization's leadership or to examine any information that is critical of the religion. The manner in which the organization's leadership, the Watchtower Society, emphasizes its self-proclaimed authority to members is a third factor that clearly identifies Jehovah's Witnesses as a religious cult.

The first two things I listed (perhaps also the most telling in terms of a persons morality) were not opinions, they are statements of fact.

I'll reiterate, and you can tell us what you think about them:

The blood doctrine is quite unbiblical, and kills people,

The shunning doctrine is quite unbiblical, destroys families and individuals, and sometimes, it kills people.

    northern girl,

Two things I like about you. One is you are here. Two is you are staying here. So don't give up.

    You asked Aztec:

"Did you do research on cults on your own or just hear from exJWs"

If some of the posters appear impatient with you, part of the reason is that they HAVE done the research and they are livid over what they have found. You will probably agree it is not former JWs who are told not to look at opposing literature, but it is the our JW brothers and sisters who cannot do this kind of research.

We can recommend to you some books to research: Steven Hassan has two books out on cults and although he was never a JW he understands the witnesses and cults very well. Eric Hoffer produced a great book called True Believers. This is good for any JW or EX JW although Jehovah's Witnesses are not mentioned once in the book. Crisis of Conscience and Search for Christian Freedom are a must read although they are written by former JW.

This is your chance, Northern girl, to do this research and make sure going back to the KH is worthy of returning. Once you are reinstated you will not be allowed to come here or read most of these books without risk of being disfellowshipped again.

Nice to have you here. If we sometimes seem impatient or rude please forgive us. Many of us are exited and passionate about the truth we have found.

SixofNine : Being on the outside looking for some time now, I've had many people tell me that there is no way they or their family members would ever take a blood transfusion. They have no idea what my beliefs are so are telling me this with no 'strings'. I am friends with the head of nursing in a hospital and she wouldn't allow any of her family to take blood either. What she will do is periodically store her own blood. She says most people who get blood would have made it without blood but the doctors are covering their proverbial ***.

I can speak first hand that shunning is not nice. Even so, I agree with the org. that the cong. must be kept clean. If they had welcomed me back while I still smoked, what would have been my incentive to clean up my act.

Always interesting to see the feeding frenzy that developes whenever a JW (or a newbie claiming to be a JW) shows up...
