True Fark, but I'm thinking of people's reactions to accounts...is it evil to be apathetic of evil that you yourself have experienced in some way.

The JW's rationalize the evil action of people into, 'everybody makes mistakes' (in the case of child abuse), and they use the "bad association' scripture to prove wrong anything that may be 'bad' in their eyes. Manipulation is not subjective, neither are bad actions. Perhaps the subjective thing is people opinion of evil itself.

Murder is always evil. So is rape, and molestation.

That's how I see it. If they support or ignore evil actions, then they are evil themselves, and if the individual is evil, then so is the org. I think that can go backwards, too.

    I don't know.

I agree Farkle, the debate has become 'are JWs evil' which becomes impossible to discuss since the entire concept of 'evil' is so fluid. And sleepy seems to be focusing on the motivation of the average JW - are they motivated out of love or hate to do what they do. Of course, most are not motivated out of hate or malice - but does that excuse the actions?

I think we can all see the the actions of the average JW is not beneficial to mankind in general. It is not beneficial to familiy and freinds when they shun you. It is not beneficial to the average JW who is struggling to make all the meetings and satisfy the elders and their own tweaked 'bilble trained conscience' in FS hours. It is not beneficial to the JWs who are excluded from the local congo's 'power click' and made to feel like second class citizens.

So 'are they evil'? They do evil things w/ good intentions. Does that heal the pain? Nope.

Oh and as far as WHY many JWs joined, did we do this out of love or what was our motivation for being a JW? Remember that a great # of JWs had the religion beat (physically and/or mentally) into them from age 0. They had no choice. Others are snookered in via the JW love-bombing and don't see reality until it's too late - if ever.

Well, I'm not in any doubt at all as to whether JW's are good people or not.

    They're not.

    IMHO

    Romans 3:10-12 Amphlified Bible:

"As it is written, None is righteous, just and truthful and upright and conscientious, no, not one. No one understands - no one intelligently discerns or comprehends; no one seeks out God. All have turned aside; together they have gone wrong and have become unprofitable and worthless; no one does right, not even one!"

I think that scripture should humble all of us, Christian, JW, or otherwise.

    sleepy,
If you can understand humans in the larger concept of the human community and universal ethics, such as justice and personal responsibility, they are evil.

On a group level, they demand rights and justice. On a personal level they become ethically immoral by not extending this to others.
I think its morally evasive to attribute all their negative behavior to groupthink.

They live in this human world, deal with others evryday, see how the world treats each other. And whether they understand this or not,it comes down to personal responsibity regarding their behaviors and actions when dealing with others. And whether they understand this or not they are are accountable on this level.

The abusive behaviors they manifest (shunning, educational deficits, womens second class status not really giving to their community, archaic methods in dealing with child abuse, etc etc go beyond the norm. This negates the few good behaviors they may have.
What I see now and recognize what I once was ,when aJW,is the 'banality' of evil. That its an evryday group of normal looking people ,who perpetuate unethical/evil and abdicate moral responsibilities.Tina
