Dear Tornapart, your attitude is wonderful ! I have the utmost confidence that you will find your way through the jungle of ideas that are out there.
Use your mind, your critical thinking skills, and in no time your BU*l SH*T detector is working 100%
Read books .articles, posts on the Internet, whatever comes your way, just do not close your mind to ideas and opinions that may challenge what you believe and feel at present. Those ideas may, or may not have validity, you will have to decide, but the more you learn the easier it gets to decide.
For myself, I will not accept merely the thoughts or experiences of others as something I could base my life on, or my "beliefs", though in truth I do not have beliefs, I will only trust as valid things that are testable and have solid proof to back them up.
Faith is a waste of ones life, faith is easily misplaced, and you are open to manipulation by others who are aware of your beliefs that have no proof.
Do not squander your freedom, use it to your best advantage.
atrapado - you typify the currently popular view that becasue we don't know everything nobody should be emphatic about anything. I disagree.
This sort of reasoning is frequently used as an excuse for intellectual laziness and a justification for believeing things on inadequate evidence.
We can talk about critical thinking skills and apply them to everything. Yet those where the same methods others taught us, aren't we arriving at the conclusion because of the tools someone else gave us?
Yes because they are the only effective tools to discover what its true. You can have your own opinion but not your own facts.
There are lots of things we can assert with confidence. Everybody's opinion is not equally valid, evidence matters.
Thanks wobble.. I will continue to explore.
Atrapado I agree with what you say. I think the reason why there is so much supposed 'unity' amongst JWs is that they never question what they are told. Just accept. They want to be like everyone else and believe the same things. This just turns people into robots. I think this is why Jesus never told his disciples or interested ones the answers to everything. He gave them questions. Those questions led to more questions. He was encouraging people to develop their own thinking ability and come to their own conclusions. He doesn't want robots to be his followers. He encouraged people to have faith but faith based on their own thinking and not controlled thinking.
So when this supposed Jewish man who thought of himself as a demi-god messiah said 'if you are not for me you are against me' or 'I am the way and the truth and the light and NO ONE comes to the father except through me', or 'I will seperate the sheep from the goats' exactly how much a 'Freedom' of choice person are we talking about.
By the way none of those things Jesus claimed for himself are in the Jewish messiah playbook, only Jesus claims these things (well maybe a little smattering in the Essene community).
At this point I don't believe in a black or white mentality because the Universe within itself is not as such. There is much we still do not know.
When you learn to have critical thinking, anything, is possible.
When you look at the bible with spiritual and scientific sensiblitites you see a whole other life taking place on it's own. I think there are deep universal codes within its stucture.
My therory (for now) is, I believe man has evolved from a certain form of bacteria from the earths waters. Therefore, I'm enitally from dust. Life was breathed into this bacteria from it's initial sorce. As man evolved, an ego evolved which is where man has became lightened with certain intellect. So I believe in evolution, but I also believe in a god. The first man with this new intellegence, wasn't really all the intellient in the begining. And as you can see from our behaviors we are still base creatures that need certain guidance. Indigenous people that have had no contact with the outside world, create there own core values, much like the bible to keep themselves in line.
Since we are from an original source. I do believe though man wrote this book called the bible there are some core universal codes within it's sturcture that are benefical to mankind.
Now as far as some becoming athiest. I personally believe that the psyche of each indiviual is varied. Some don't believe has relief from guilt. Some because of information that one has sencerly has gathered. Others out of anger. You can make as many estimations as one likes, again, it's not all that black n white...you can assume as much as your intelligence allows you too...but it still doesn't make it correct.
cofty truth is based on a frame of reference. Tell me are there more natual numbers(1,2,3,4 ...) between 0 and postive infinity than real values(0, 0.1, 0.11 ...) from 0 to 1? Did you know that there are the same number of real values between 0 to 1 than 0 to postive infinity. Wait what? count([0, infinity)) = count([0,1]) for all real values. Thats nonsense because [0,1] should be a subset of [0, infinity). I believe the first one to discover this was going crazy. Makes no sence that they are equal numbers between 0-1 as 0-2 or 0-infinity.
Now depending how you define your math the above is true or not. The way we define it is true, yet if we were to make different rules then it might be true it might not.
We been trained to think a certain way. Most discoveries happen because of an accidents or because someone was thinking completely outside our education system.
I am not saying we shouldn't be emphatic about anything(we all need O2 etc.). But sometimes (I feel might be wrong) that we tend to be emphatic just to prove our point even though there is not enough evidence to guarntee we are 100% right.
And I am not against any debate it might be only the few threads I have read but I get the impression asseartions are made that are not 100% accurate as if they were and sometimes people are put down because they don't agree with others.

This seems like a strange comment from someone who believes in the bible. Most of us who no longer believe in the bible as any kind of divine message have come to realize that for this precise reason, it bears some serious scrutiny BECAUSE we've been trained or indoctrinated from a very young age to think this certain way.
Yikes....as you can see....I'm perfectly imperfect in grammer and spelling....
